We have just put up a summary of some of our research into schools using the Australian Developmental Curriculum. Pleasingly but not surprisingly, children’s literacy, reading, spelling, numeracy have all continued to develop at appropriate rates. In other words, for all those people who ask, "but what about the data?" our researh results may help. This is important so that those skeptics out there who may think that allowing young children some time each day to actively engage in investigations and to pursue some of their own interests will somehow stop them learning. Most importantly however, is that not only have we shown in the past 6 years that children’s literacy and numeracy continues to develop well and appropriately for their age and grade, we have also witnessed the most wonderful other aspects of life and learning as a result of the ADC. Aspects of life such as higher level of engagement and more pro social skills and behaviors. Children wanting to come to school and an increase in school attendance. Children’s oral language taking off so much with children everyday talking and writing and reading with higher level s of meaning and comprehension. It is a great credit to those schools and leaders and teachers within them which have implemented the ADC. To hear teachers repeatedly say they have never found teaching so rewarding and to see parents noticing a difference in their children is profound and wonderful. To see happy, engaged children learning not just to be literacy and numerate, but to learn about themselves , their identity, life kills and meaning in their lives and who want to come to school is something to be very pleased about.
