The nationally recognised CHCPRT025 – Identify and Report Children and Young People at Risk unit provides educators and professionals with the essential knowledge and practical skills to protect children and young people from harm.

This self-paced, accredited online course is designed to fit around your busy schedule as an educator. You can log in and complete the learning at a time that works best for you, and pause or return whenever you need.

The course takes around 6 hours to complete (plus assessments) and gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS IN YOUR STATE:

VICTORIA

  • Based on legislation such as the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, persons in day-to-day charge and nominated supervisors are required to undertake a child protection course such as CHCPRT025
  • Understanding of reporting protocols and familiarity with state child protection frameworks is essential.
  • Refresher training is encouraged to uphold compliance and best practices

NEW SOUTH WALES

  • Under section 162A, nominated supervisors, persons in day-to-day charge, and family day care coordinators must complete an approved child protection course such as CHCPRT025
  • In-house training is not sufficient
  • Although section 162A does not specify refresher training, Regulation 84 requires that staff be continually made aware of up-to-date child protection laws and obligations. Refresher training is considered best practice (suggested every 12 – 24 months)

QUEENSLAND

  • Under section 162A of the Education and Care Services National Law (effective from 1 April 2025), approved providers must ensure that nominated supervisors, persons in day-to-day charge, and family day care coordinators complete an approved child protection course such as CHCPRT025
  • Completed training must be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO); in-house training is not sufficient
  • All staff must also be aware of child protection laws and responsibilities; refresher training and record-keeping are encouraged for compliance with Regulation 84 and NQS Quality Area 2

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

  • Mandatory Reporters and Nominated Supervisors are legally required to complete an approved child protection course such as CHCPRT025. All staff must understand applicable legislation (e.g., Children and Community Services Act 2004). In-house training is not sufficient
  • Refresher training is strongly recommended yearly to keep staff knowledge current

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

  • Persons in day-to-day charge and nominated supervisors completing an approved child protection course, such as CHCPRT025 is considered best practice
  • All staff working with children must know SA-specific child protection laws, and refresher training every 12–24 months is recommended

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

  • Under legislation (e.g., Children and Young People Act 2008), persons in day-to-day charge and nominated supervisors must complete an approved child protection course such as CHCPRT025
  • All staff must understand ACT-specific child protection legislation and reporting obligations; refresher training is recommended regularly

TASMANIA

  • Mandatory Reporters and Nominated Supervisors are required to complete an approved child protection course such as CHCPRT025.
  • Refresher training is strongly recommended annually

NORTHERN TERRITORY

  • Under the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007, all adults (18+) are mandatory reporters. Training must include understanding legislation, recognising abuse, reporting obligations, and strategies to intervene
  • The unit CHCPRT025 is accepted and available for this purpose
  • Refresher training is advisable

What You Will Learn

Who Should Enrol?

Course Delivery and Assessment

The online learning and assessment is expected to take approximately 5 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the course in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and assessment questions.

This course is delivered fully online and will be self-paced. Students are expected to complete this course within six (6) months after enrolment.

Assessment activities include both a practical element and a theory element.

Entry Requirements

Students must have access to a device with camera and audio recording capabilities, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a webcam. This device will be necessary for creating short videos as part of the assessment, in which students verbally explain the required assessment outcomes.
