What you will learn from this session:

How can we create purposeful and engaging learning environments that sustain and enrich children’s learning through play and investigation? Join us as we explore practical strategies to design spaces that inspire young learners, while supporting academic, social, and emotional growth.

Through an exploration of images, video and practical examples, you’ll learn how to design learning spaces that:

  • Stimulate children's brains and encourage curiosity and discovery.
  • Balance child-led and educator-led intentions in setting up dynamic, engaging spaces.
  • Offer open-ended learning experiences that engage children at different developmental levels.

This session can be completed alongside other sessions in our Walker Learning Certification pathway or as a stand-alone session ensuring you’re ready to make your own learning spaces places of belonging, exploration, and meaningful engagement for all students.

By attending Creating an Engaging and Intentional Learning Environment you will:

  • Acquire strategies for designing effective learning environments that foster literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills through hands-on, inquiry-based learning both indoors and outdoors.
  • Learn ways to create intentional spaces that promote active engagement and self-directed exploration, encouraging children to take ownership of their learning.
  • Gain insights into integrating everyday materials and resources, including examples of budget-friendly options, to enrich learning spaces and provoke deeper inquiry.
  • See examples of effective, open-ended learning spaces that are flexible, inclusive, and encourage children’s natural curiosity.
  • Understand the importance of planning for dynamic, adaptable environments that can be adjusted to meet the evolving needs and interests of students.
  • Develop techniques for scaffolding vocabulary, literacy, and numeracy skills through thoughtful environment setup and interactive displays.
  • Explore practical approaches to support fine and gross motor development, creativity, and resilience through varied and flexible play and learning zones.
  • Build strategies to support focus, persistence, and self-regulation, using intentional and inviting spaces that foster concentration and active engagement.
  • Learn how to apply an inclusive, intentional teaching approach that reflects cultural, social, and individual diversity, building a respectful and responsive classroom community.
