Creating open-ended play spaces in early childhood settings

Susie Rosback, Natalie Coulson

Inspiring Play Spaces is aimed at educators who want to create enriching, open-ended play experiences for children. It shows educators many ways to set up play spaces to foster children’s engagement and learning opportunities including:

  • Engagement: Create play spaces that invite children to investigate, explore, and discover. Foster an environment where they can practice skills, experience failure and success, observe, imagine, dream, and pretend. And in working alongside their peers, children learn to share, listen and communicate.
  • Holistic Development: Understand how these dynamic play areas help children develop a sense of identity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
  • Practical Implementation: Explore a variety of ways to set up and execute different play spaces. We provide practical examples and ideas to inspire your own unique setups.
  • Educational Alignment: Discover how these play experiences help you meet the requirements of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the National Quality Standard (NQS) in responding to children’s interests and understanding the profound benefits of play.
