Identifying and supporting science, technology, engineering and mathematics in children’s play

Niki Buchan, Bronwyn Cron

Children naturally engage in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in early childhood education through play. After all, play inherently involves observation, experimentation, and investigation.

STEM Detectives is a practical guide for Australian early childhood educators, designed to help them recognize and maximize STEM experiences in children’s play. This resource provides advice on the role of adults in facilitating STEM learning, along with ideas for creating enriching learning environments and selecting appropriate STEM resources. It aims to foster problem-solving and creative thinking through playful exploration.
